Wisdom teeth surgery is a very common procedure, and the necessity of it depends on specific factors including the positioning of any wisdom teeth present in the mouth. Generally speaking, surgery is necessary if there is not enough room for these third molars to come through (impaction) or if they are coming in at an angle that crowds or damages other teeth (malocclusion). The removal of impacted wisdom teeth also decreases the risk of dental decay and gum disease since these molars can be difficult to clean thoroughly.
Many people experience issues related to their wisdom teeth such as mild pain or swelling due to pressure from surrounding tissues. In cases like this, it can sometimes be beneficial to have them surgically removed by an oral surgeon in order to prevent further complications. Other times, when no symptoms are present but overcrowding could occur eventually, dentists may advise prophylactic removal prior to more serious problems developing.
When a tooth is pulled out, it leaves behind an empty socket which fills with a blood clot to protect the underlying bone and nerves. If this clot fails to form or becomes dislodged too soon after tooth extraction, it can lead to dry sockets. The underlying bone and nerve are then exposed to air and food particles, leading to severe pain.
To avoid dry sockets after an extraction procedure, there are several steps that you can take after the surgery:
Although each person's experience varies - often based on age and complexity of surgery - wisdom teeth removal rests within an estimated range of 2-4 weeks total recovery time before you can be considered completely healed following the procedure. Needless to say, it pays off dividends down the road with being able avoid certain dental issues down the line due either directly or indirectly by having them removed now!
